Koen Overmars Consultancy and Joint Research Centre (JRC) improve ILUC method

In May 2015 the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission and Koen Overmars Consultancy published a report on ILUC (indirect land use change) effects of biofuel cropping: Estimates of indirect land use change from biofuels based on historical data. This report is an further expansion of the work presented in Overmars et al. 2011, which presents ILUC factors based on historical data on expansion of agricultural land and yield increase. The new report presents ILUC factors for individual feedstock including both 1st and 2nd generation biofuels and narrows the uncertainty ranges of the ILUC factors relative to those presented in Overmars et al. 2011.

PBL and Koen Overmars Consultancy publish new approach to understanding ILUC

On November 12 2014, PBL – Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency published a report on ILUC (indirect land use change) of first generation biofuel production: Struggling to deal with uncertainties What is known about indirect land-use change? Koen Overmars Consultancy co-authored this report. In this report the main uncertainties of ILUC calculation are described in a clear and understandable manner. The report illustrates this with examples from recent literature. Additionally, the report presents a new approach to quantify ILUC. ILUC is not calculated as gCO2/MJ, but as an effort in one of the determining factors (yield increase, reduced consumption) in order to achieve a certain ILUC level.
